ROOTFund

OPEN SOURCE FUND

In March 2022, Kangaroot announced the start of a financial fund that will tackle one of the elephants in the room when it comes to open source development:

Who pays the volunteers that maintain older, but wide-used libraries & software components?

The volunteers that aren't on hardware or software vendors' payrolls. Men & women who started developing or maintaining a piece of software and do not want to step away even when users get too demanding or when security issues arise.

Kangaroot has decided to start the ROOTFund with an initial contribution of € 25.000. As of April the 1st 2022, every day Kangaroot charges a customer € -10 will be added to the ROOTFund. Additionally, customers who want to contribute as well, will be able to do so.

A panel of experts (Kangaroot team members, partners & customers) will decide which developers and/or which open source projects will get paid by the fund. Fund will be transferred either directly to a project or to developers via the Github Sponsors system.

WireGuard

ROOTFund supports WireGuard

WireGuard® is an extremely simple yet fast & modern VPN that uses state-of-the-art cryptography. It aims to be faster, simpler, leaner, and more useful than IPsec, while avoiding the massive headache. Plus it intends to be considerably more performant than OpenVPN.

WireGuard is currently under heavy development, but already it might be regarded as the most secure, easiest to use, and simplest VPN solution in the industry. We are happy to sponsor WireGuard in their continuous developing as free open source software!

Time to give back to the community

OPEN SOURCE FUND

Kangaroot's ROOTFund is our way of saying Thank You to all the maintainers who work tirelessly to bring you some amazing open source software. We're starting with 25.000 euro to share with open source projects in need of sponsors. Nominate your own project or share the news with your favourite OSS maintainers.

Automation

ROOTSTACKS

Kangaroot has developed a number of "rootstacks". These stacks are

  • open source;
  • automated environments;
  • that deliver you a platform of integrated open source components;
  • ready to be used by a developer, application owner, etc ...

These stacks will offer you a cloud-provider independent software stack, that can be run anywhere; with the ease of use normally found in public cloud services.

And they can also be deployed on your own hardware, in your own datacenter.
