World Social Work Day 2021
Today is World Social Work Day. A key day in the year that social workers worldwide stand together to raise the visibility of social services for the future of societies, and to defend social justice and human rights. This year, the 2021 World Social Day highlights the Zulu term Ubuntu, meaning "I am Because We are" and stands for strengthening social solidarity and global connectedness.
Theme of the 2020 to 2030 Global Agenda:
Ubuntu: I am Because We are
Ubuntu: ‘I am because we are’ is a concept and philosophy that resonates with the social work perspective of the interconnectedness of all peoples and their environments. It speaks to the need for global solidarity and also highlights indigenous knowledge and wisdom. At a time when global politics has retreated into nationalism, Ubuntu is a powerful message on the need for solidarity at all levels: within communities, societies, and globally. It is a message that all people are interconnected and that our future is dependent on recognising all peoples involvement in co-building a sustainable, fair, and socially just future.
Kangaroot's solidarity at all levels
Today, we would like to reflect briefly on our social contribution. At the beginning of 2021, our customers could choose whether to receive a New Year's gift or to support a charity. We were pleased to see that the great majority agreed to donate their gift to one of our chosen charities: Pelicano, Think Pink and Natuurpunt with a total of 1 800 euros.
Pelicano
1 child in 5 still grows up in poverty or risks falling into poverty. That is more than 500 000 children in Belgium. A hallucinatory figure that the Pelicano Foundation wants to reduce as quickly as possible. Every day Pelicano fights against child poverty in our country to make sure every child living in our country is entitled to the same opportunities: sufficient food, healthy living conditions, decent education and meaningful leisure time. Saving children from poverty is first and foremost of great importance to the individual, but also our society benefits from it.
Think Pink
With supporting Think Pink, we support the national breast cancer campaign that aims to improve the lives of breast cancer patients and their families.
Natuurpunt
And by donating to Natuurpunt we were able to support our local park: Wolvenberg, the only nature reserve in the center of Antwerp, just around the corner at our offices.
So thank you all for supporting together!
